Cheaters Salted Caramel Frosting

  • 1 14 oz. bag of wrapped caramels
  • 1/2 tsp ground sea salt
  • 8 oz cream cheese at room temperature
  • 2 sticks of butter at room temperature
  • 4-5 cups of powered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract


Unwrap the caramels and melt according to the package directions. I added a couple tablespoons of water to the caramels before I melted them. Add the sea salt and stir. I reserved some of the caramel for a garnish. Allow the caramel to sit and cool slightly while you start the rest of the frosting. In a mixer, blend the the cream cheese and butter together. Add 2 cups of the powdered sugar to the cream cheese and butter mixture. While the caramel is still liquid but not hot, pour it into mixture. Beat to combine. This takes a good few minutes. If you find that some of the caramel has hardend, scoop it out and melt it again. Add it back into the mixture and mix to combine. Add the vanilla extract. Add the rest of the powdered sugar one cup at a time stopping when you like the consistency and level of sweetness.
